⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and ensure the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (if battery has any charge remaining)
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening covered by a cap on the right side of the shifter base, near the console trim
- Use a flat-head screwdriver or the metal end of the key to pry off the small plastic cap covering the override slot
- Insert a small flat-head screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and press the button on the shifter handle, then move the shifter to Neutral
- If the shifter will not move, ensure you are pressing the override fully down while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and applying firm forward pressure on the shifter
- Once in Neutral, remove the tool and replace the override cap

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, you will not have brake lights or ignition position detection. The shift lock override mechanical release will still function - use it to bypass the electronic shift lock. Do not attempt to turn the steering wheel as it will lock without power steering. The transmission will remain in Neutral once selected using the override.
