🚨 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 Outlander PHEV uses an electronic push-button gear selector system with P-R-N-D-B buttons on the center console.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is engaged
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal
  3. Press the POWER button twice WITHOUT pressing the brake pedal to enter accessory mode (this provides minimal electrical power to the shifter system)
  4. While holding the brake pedal, press the N (Neutral) button
  5. If the 12V battery is completely dead and the shifter does not respond, locate the shift lock override access panel on the center console near the shifter buttons
  6. Remove the small cover panel (typically pry gently with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool)
  7. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the shift lock override slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the N button
  8. If manually overriding, you may need to use a portable jump starter on the 12V battery to provide minimal power to the shift-by-wire system
  9. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved slowly

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function even with override. You must provide minimal 12V power via jump pack or external battery to the 12V system to engage Neutral. The high-voltage traction battery does not help with shifter operation.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Outlander PHEV must be transported on a flatbed truck ONLY. Do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground—the electric motors are directly coupled to the wheels and towing will cause severe damage to the electric drive system and generate dangerous voltage. If the vehicle cannot enter Neutral electronically, flatbed transport is the only safe option.
