🚨 2022 Morgan Plus Four: Emergency Neutral

The 2022 Morgan Plus Four uses a BMW-sourced ZF 8-speed automatic transmission with a conventional console-mounted shifter lever.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Attempt to turn the ignition to ON position (push start button without brake if keyless, or turn key)
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  3. Locate the shift lock override access—on BMW-based systems this is typically a small round or rectangular slot near the shifter base
  4. Remove the small plastic cap covering the override slot (may require prying with fingernail or small screwdriver)
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the button on the shifter (if equipped) and move to Neutral
  7. If the shifter still won't move, ensure you're pressing the override fully—these mechanisms require firm pressure
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter console, typically to the right or front of the shifter itself, under a small removable cap—follows BMW drivetrain integration standard
With zero electrical power
With zero battery power, the shift lock override becomes critical. You may need to use the mechanical key (if keyless entry) to unlock the steering column by inserting it into the emergency lock cylinder. The override slot will still function mechanically. On BMW-based systems, the shifter should release even without power when the override is properly engaged.
