⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake fully
- Turn the ignition to the ON/ACC position if battery power is available (do not start engine)
- Firmly press and hold the brake pedal
- Press the shift lever release button and move the lever to Neutral
- If the shift lock is engaged due to brake light switch failure or dead battery, locate the shift lock override slot
- The override slot is typically found near the base of the shifter console - look for a small covered opening adjacent to or behind the shift lever base
- Remove the cover cap (may require a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool)
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving to Neutral
- Keep the tool inserted and lever in Neutral until the vehicle is secured or moved
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the center console shifter assembly, typically behind or to the side of the lever - covered by a small cap that can be pried out
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: Use the shift lock override slot method described above. The mechanical override allows shifter movement without any electrical power. You may need to manually unlock the doors using the key blade hidden in the key fob.
