⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is engaged and wheel chocks are in place
- Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if the battery has any charge
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock release button on the column shroud near the shifter base
- Insert a small screwdriver into the shift lock release slot (usually covered by a small cap)
- Press the release mechanism while simultaneously moving the column shifter toward Neutral
- If battery is completely dead, the mechanical override should still work - maintain pressure on the release while shifting
Shift-lock override location
On the steering column shroud near the base of the shifter lever, typically on the right side; look for a small cap or slot
With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the mechanical shift lock override will still function. Insert a tool into the release slot, press firmly, and move the shifter to Neutral. The steering column will be locked, so the vehicle can only be pushed or towed straight.
