🚨 1995 Nissan Altima: Emergency Neutral

The 1995 Nissan Altima (U13 generation) came with a 4-speed automatic transmission featuring a column-mounted shifter; CVT was not available this year.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is engaged and wheel chocks are in place
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if the battery has any charge
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Locate the shift lock release button on the column shroud near the shifter base
  5. Insert a small screwdriver into the shift lock release slot (usually covered by a small cap)
  6. Press the release mechanism while simultaneously moving the column shifter toward Neutral
  7. If battery is completely dead, the mechanical override should still work - maintain pressure on the release while shifting
Shift-lock override location
On the steering column shroud near the base of the shifter lever, typically on the right side; look for a small cap or slot
With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the mechanical shift lock override will still function. Insert a tool into the release slot, press firmly, and move the shifter to Neutral. The steering column will be locked, so the vehicle can only be pushed or towed straight.
