🚨 2011 Nissan Altima: Emergency Neutral

The 2011 Altima Hybrid uses a console-mounted shift lever with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake-light circuit.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Engage the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON or ACC position if 12V power is available.
  3. Locate the shift lock release cover on the console, directly to the left of the shifter base—it's a small rectangular cap.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to gently pry off the shift lock release cover.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or a key into the release slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shift lever to Neutral.
  6. If the vehicle has zero electrical power, you must jump the 12V battery (under the hood) first—the shifter will not release without any power to the shift lock solenoid.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or towed with the front wheels on the ground at low speeds for short distances only.

With zero electrical power
The shift lock solenoid requires 12V power to release. With a completely dead battery, you must jump-start or provide external 12V power to the vehicle's electrical system before the override will function. The hybrid system does NOT need to be READY, but the 12V must be live.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The Altima Hybrid can be flat-towed with front wheels on the ground in Neutral for SHORT distances at LOW speeds only (consult owner's manual for limits, typically under 50 miles at under 35 mph). For longer distances or highway speeds, use a flatbed or tow dolly with the front wheels OFF the ground to avoid damaging the hybrid transaxle and electric motor components. Do NOT attempt to tow with rear wheels raised.
