🚨 2026 Nissan Altima: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 Nissan Altima (seventh generation, introduced 2025) uses a console-mounted shifter lever with electronic shift lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON position if you have any battery power (does not need to start).
  3. Locate the shift lock release: look for a small rectangular or round cap near the base of the shifter assembly, typically on the left or front side.
  4. Use a flat-head screwdriver or similar tool to remove the cap covering the shift lock release.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or a similar object into the release slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding down the shift lock override, move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. The vehicle can now be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, jump the 12V battery temporarily to provide minimal power for the ignition system and shift lock. If jumping is not possible, the mechanical shift lock override should still function, but you may need to apply firm pressure while manipulating the shifter.
