The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small covered slot on the left side of the shifter base, near where the shifter enters the console
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to remove the cap covering the override slot
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If successful, the shifter will move freely to Neutral; keep the tool pressed while shifting
- Remove the tool and replace the cap after shifting to Neutral
