🚨 2001 Nissan Gloria: Emergency Neutral

The 2001 Nissan Gloria (Y34 generation, 1999-2001) typically uses a column-mounted automatic shifter with mechanical shift-lock interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has charge
  3. Locate the shift-lock override: on the Y34 column shifter, look for a small access hole or slot near where the shifter stalk meets the steering column, typically on the underside or right side of the column shroud
  4. You may need to remove a small rubber plug or cap covering the override access
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, hex key, or similar thin tool into the override hole
  6. Press the tool in while simultaneously pressing the shifter release button (on the end of the stalk) and moving the shifter down through the gate toward Neutral
  7. Maintain pressure on the override tool until the shifter reaches Neutral

With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the mechanical shift-lock override will still function. The ignition key may be difficult to turn without power assist, but the override mechanism is purely mechanical. Use a flashlight to locate the override access point. The brake lights will not illuminate but the mechanical release will allow shifter movement.
