🚨 2026 Nissan Leaf: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Leaf uses a console-mounted monostable-style electronic shifter that returns to center position after selection, with shift-by-wire control.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- WARNING: The Leaf must be transported on a flatbed with all wheels OFF the ground - do NOT tow with any wheels touching the road
- Apply the parking brake and chock the wheels
- Ensure the 12V battery has some charge - if completely dead, jump the 12V battery or connect a power source to the 12V jump terminals under the hood
- Press the power button twice without pressing the brake pedal to enter ACC or ON mode
- Press and hold the brake pedal
- Move the shifter to N position
- If the shift lock is still engaged: locate the shift lock override access
- The override is typically accessed via a small cap or cover near the shifter base on the console
- Remove the cap and insert a tool into the slot, press down while moving shifter to N
- Once in N, the vehicle can be winched onto a flatbed - do NOT roll on wheels under power

With zero electrical power
The Leaf absolutely requires some 12V power to release the electronic parking brake and shift lock. If the 12V battery is completely dead, you must jump-start the 12V system (NOT the high-voltage traction battery) using the jump terminals under the hood. Without any 12V power, the shift lock override may still work mechanically, but the parking brake will remain engaged electronically. In this case, the vehicle must be lifted or dragged onto a flatbed.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Nissan Leaf must be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels OFF the ground. Towing with wheels on the ground will cause the motor to generate current, potentially damaging the electrical system and creating a safety hazard. Even in N, do not tow this vehicle - flatbed transport only.
