The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake fully.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (this may allow the shift lock to release with brake pedal pressure).
- If the shift lock does not release, locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cover cap located on the left side of the shifter base, toward the driver's side.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the mechanical key blade to pry off the plastic cover cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and push down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shift lever from Park.
- Move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the ignition key will not turn or release from the lock cylinder with a dead battery, you may need to manually unlock the steering column lock—consult the owner's manual for the specific key release procedure or use a jump box to provide minimal power to the ignition system.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shift lock cannot release normally. Use the mechanical shift lock override slot as described. If the steering lock is also engaged, you may need to jump-start the vehicle minimally or use a jump box to unlock the steering column before moving the vehicle. The key may not turn or release from the ignition without some power.
