⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if you have any battery power (this may allow the shift interlock to release)
- If the brake-light switch is failed but you have power, press the brake pedal firmly and attempt to shift normally
- If there is no power or the interlock won't release, locate the shift lock override slot on the upper left side of the steering column shroud, near the base of the shift lever
- Remove the small rectangular cover cap by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or the emergency key into the exposed override slot and push down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral
- Release the override tool and replace the cover cap

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the column shift interlock can still be manually overridden using the shift lock release slot. No ignition position is required for the mechanical override to function. You will not have power steering or brake assist, so ensure the vehicle is properly secured before attempting to move it.
