🚨 1995 Nissan Pathfinder: Emergency Neutral

The 1995 Pathfinder automatic uses a floor-mounted console shifter with a mechanical shift lock system tied to the brake pedal and ignition key.

The procedure

  1. Engage the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available.
  3. Locate the shift lock override: look for a small rectangular or round covered slot near the base of the shifter, typically on the left side or front of the shifter gate.
  4. Pry off the small plastic cover using a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail.
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park through the gate to Neutral.
  7. If you have battery power, pressing the brake pedal while using the override may make the process easier.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock on early 1990s Pathfinders is typically mechanical (linked to the key position and brake pedal) and may still function or may default unlocked depending on the mechanism state.
