The 1996 Pathfinder uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift-lock interlock system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge
- Locate the shift-lock override slot on the left side of the shifter housing near the steering column
- Remove the small plastic cover over the override slot by carefully prying with a flat-blade screwdriver
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or key into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If completely successful, leave in Neutral; if vehicle needs to roll freely for loading, continue to move shifter through to Neutral after passing through Reverse and Drive positions
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the column shifter housing, near where the shifter meets the steering column; covered by a small removable plastic cap
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift-lock override is purely mechanical on this generation. The override slot and release mechanism will function without any battery power. You may need to manually turn the ignition key cylinder to the ACC position mechanically (which does not require electrical power) to allow the steering wheel to unlock for maneuvering.
