🚨 1990 Nissan Sentra: Emergency Neutral

The 1990 Nissan Sentra B12 generation came with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 3-speed automatic with console-mounted shifter.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. FOR MANUAL TRANSMISSION: Depress clutch pedal fully and move shifter to Neutral position (middle position with side-to-side play). No override needed.
  2. FOR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION: Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged
  3. Locate the shift lock override - on 1990 automatics, look for a small slot or access point near the shifter base, typically covered by a small plastic cap
  4. If battery has any charge, turn key to ACC or ON position
  5. Depress brake pedal firmly
  6. Remove the small cap covering the shift lock override slot
  7. Insert a small screwdriver or key into the slot and press down
  8. While holding the override, move shifter from Park through Reverse to Neutral
Shift-lock override location
For automatic transmission: small slot near shifter base under removable cap; exact location varies but typically on driver's side of shifter console
With zero electrical power
Manual transmission requires no power - simply depress clutch and shift to neutral. For automatic with completely dead battery, the shift lock override should still function mechanically. If it does not release, vehicle must be transported on flatbed or with drive wheels off ground.
