🚨 1992 Nissan Sentra: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 Nissan Sentra B13 generation came with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic with console-mounted shifter.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. FOR MANUAL TRANSMISSION: Depress clutch pedal fully and move shifter to Neutral position (middle position with side-to-side play). No override needed.
  2. FOR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION: Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged
  3. If battery has any charge, turn key to ACC or ON position
  4. Depress brake pedal firmly
  5. Locate the shift lock override slot - look for a small rectangular or circular opening near the base of the shifter, typically on the left side with a removable cap
  6. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the cap
  7. Insert a small screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
  8. While holding the override down, move shifter from Park to Neutral
Shift-lock override location
For automatic transmission: small slot with removable cap near the base of the shifter assembly, typically on the left (driver's) side of the shifter
With zero electrical power
Manual transmission requires no power - simply depress clutch and shift to neutral. For automatic with completely dead battery, the mechanical shift lock override should still function. If override does not release the shifter, vehicle must be transported on flatbed or with drive wheels off ground (FWD vehicle).
