🚨 1999 Nissan Silvia: Emergency Neutral

The 1999 Nissan Silvia (S15) with automatic transmission uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with a mechanical shift-lock solenoid.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to ON (or ACC) position if possible—this may provide enough power to release the shift lock
  3. Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cap, located on the left side of the shifter base near the P position
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the small cap
  5. Insert a small screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, move the shifter from P to N
  7. The vehicle can now roll; keep parking brake engaged until ready to move

With zero electrical power
The S15 Silvia shift-lock override is mechanical and does NOT require 12V power to function. Even with a completely dead battery, you can use the override slot to release the shifter and move it to N. This is a fully mechanical bypass.
