⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
- Turn ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge
- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal
- Locate the small rectangular shift lock override cover on the left side of the shifter base
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the override cover
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter to Neutral
- If battery is completely dead, you may need to jump 12V power to ACC position first to release electronic park pawl
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cover on the left side of the shifter base, approximately 1 inch from the shifter lever itself
With zero electrical power
With zero power, the shift lock AND the electronic transmission park pawl may both be engaged. You will need to provide at least ACC power via jump pack or jumper cables to release the transmission park mechanism, then use the shift lock override to move the shifter. If unable to provide any power, vehicle must be dollied or skid-lifted from rear wheels.
