⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine) - this may require a charged battery for electronic shifters
- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal
- Press the shift lock release button on the shifter handle while pulling the shifter toward you to move out of Park
- If the battery is dead and the shift lock will not release electrically, locate the shift lock override slot
- The shift lock override is accessed by removing the small rectangular trim cap on the left side of the shifter base (toward the driver's seat)
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the mechanical key into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral
- Keep the override depressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular trim cap on the left side of the shifter base; slot is directly beneath the cap, accessed with a screwdriver or key
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, use the mechanical shift lock override slot (left side of shifter base under trim cap). You will need to manually insert a key or screwdriver and press down to mechanically release the shift lock mechanism. The ignition does not need to be on to use the mechanical override.
