⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure parking brake is firmly applied and vehicle is on level ground
- Turn ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power available
- Press and fully hold the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override slot - a small covered opening near the shifter base on the left side
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key to remove the override cover cap
- While holding the brake pedal, insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- Remove screwdriver and replace cover cap
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot with removable cap on the left side of the shifter base, typically near the P button or shifter root
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the override slot still functions mechanically - you do NOT need ignition power to use it. Simply insert tool into override slot, press down, and shift to Neutral. The shifter lock is a mechanical solenoid that defaults to locked, but the override bypasses it completely.
