🚨 2021 Nissan Versa: Emergency Neutral

The 2021 Versa (third generation) uses a console-mounted CVT shifter with PRNDL positions and electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge
  3. Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal
  4. Locate the shift lock override slot near the shifter base - look for a small cover or opening on the driver's side of the shifter
  5. If there is a cover, use a small flathead screwdriver to pry it off
  6. Insert a screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
  7. While holding the override down and maintaining brake pressure, move the shifter to Neutral
  8. Release the override and verify shifter is in Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter on the driver's side; may have a small plastic cover that needs to be removed first
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override should still function mechanically to release the shifter. However, if the CVT has an electronic park pawl (less common on smaller Nissans), you may need to provide minimal ACC power via a jump pack. If the shifter will not move even with override engaged and no power available, the vehicle should be flatbedded or dollied with front wheels off the ground.
