🚨 2015 Nissan X-Trail JP: Emergency Neutral

The 2015 Japanese-market X-Trail (T32 generation) uses a console-mounted CVT shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure parking brake is firmly applied and vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power available (push start button without brake pedal)
  3. Press and fully hold the brake pedal
  4. Locate the shift lock override slot - a small rectangular opening with a removable cap on the left side of the shifter base
  5. Use a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool to pry off the override cap
  6. While holding the brake pedal, insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  7. While maintaining pressure on the override, press the shifter button (if equipped) and move shifter from Park to Neutral
  8. Remove tool and reinstall the cap

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power (dead battery), the override slot works mechanically without power. Simply insert tool into the slot, press down to release the lock pawl, and shift to Neutral. The shift lock solenoid is spring-loaded and the override mechanically releases it. Note: with smart key systems, you cannot turn ignition on without 12V power, but the shifter override still functions.
