⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground - chock the wheels securely as the electronic parking brake may not hold without power
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ON position if any battery charge remains
- Locate the shift lock override - look for a small cover near the shifter base, typically on the left or right side
- Remove the override cover cap using a flat-blade screwdriver
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override mechanism, attempt to move the shifter to Neutral
- If the shifter will not move with dead battery, the hybrid system may require auxiliary 12V power applied to the battery terminals before the shifter will release
Shift-lock override location
Small cover near the shifter base - check left and right sides of the shifter console
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the hybrid's electronic shifter may not release even with the mechanical override due to the shift-by-wire system. You may need to apply a jump pack or external 12V power to the battery before the shifter override will function. If this fails, flatbed towing with dollies under the front wheels is required.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID VEHICLE: This X-Trail uses e-POWER or hybrid drivetrain. The transmission may remain locked even with mechanical override if 12V power is completely absent. DO NOT tow with drive wheels on the ground - this can cause severe damage to the hybrid/electric drive system. Use flatbed or ensure front wheels are on dollies. If vehicle must be moved short distances without power, consult the owner's manual for the specific tow-mode procedure which may require partial disassembly of drive components.
