🚨 2025 Nissan X-Trail MX: Emergency Neutral
The 2025 X-Trail hybrid uses a console-mounted electronic shifter with a shift-lock button integrated into the shifter mechanism.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to ON or ACC position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift-lock override slot – it is typically a small covered slot near the base of the shifter assembly on the console
- Remove the cover cap by gently prying it with a flathead screwdriver or your finger
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If successful, the transmission is now in Neutral for towing
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the shifter base on the center console, typically on the left or front side of the shifter assembly
With zero electrical power
With zero power, the shift-lock override may still work mechanically. If the electronic shifter requires any power to release, you may need a jump box or external 12V source connected to attempt release. Worst case, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with drive wheels off the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: This is a hybrid with an e-CVT transmission. Even in Neutral, prolonged flat-towing can damage the hybrid transaxle. Flatbed transport or dollies under the front wheels are REQUIRED for distances over a few feet. Do not flat-tow this vehicle.
