🚨 1995 Oldsmobile 88: Emergency Neutral
The 1995 Oldsmobile 88 uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift-lock interlock tied to the brake pedal.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (this may work even with a weak/dead battery as it's mostly mechanical)
- Locate the shift-lock override access – on the column shroud near the base of the shifter lever, look for a small plastic cover or slot
- The override slot is typically found on the lower right side of the column shroud near where the shifter enters the column
- Remove or pry open the small cover cap
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the slot
- Press or push the override mechanism while pulling the shifter toward you and moving it down to Neutral
- The shifter should release and move freely to Neutral

Small slot or covered access point on the lower right side of the steering column shroud, near where the shift lever enters the column housing
With zero electrical power
The 1995 88's shift interlock is largely mechanical. With zero power, the override should still function. You may not need the key in any position – simply use the override slot to mechanically release the shifter. If the steering wheel is locked, you'll need to turn the key to at least ACC to unlock the steering column.
