🚨 1997 Oldsmobile 88: Emergency Neutral

The 1997 Oldsmobile 88 uses a traditional column-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a mechanical shift lock connected to the brake pedal interlock system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged (or wheels are chocked if parking brake is inoperative)
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if the battery has any charge; if completely dead, proceed without power
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening on the lower side of the steering column shroud, typically on the left side near the shifter mechanism
  4. Remove the small plastic cover or access panel if present (may require a small flathead screwdriver)
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot
  6. Press the override release firmly inward while simultaneously pulling the shift lever toward you and moving it to Neutral
  7. Keep the tool inserted and maintain pressure until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
  8. If loading onto a flatbed, the vehicle can now roll freely with the shifter in Neutral

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is purely mechanical and works with zero electrical power. You do not need battery power to use the override release. The challenge is that without power, you cannot verify gear position on the dash display, so work the shifter carefully and verify by attempting to push the vehicle.
