The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged (or wheels are chocked if parking brake is inoperative)
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if the battery has any charge; if completely dead, proceed without power
- Locate the shift lock override mechanism—look for a small slot or access point on the lower left side of the steering column shroud near the shifter
- If found, remove any plastic cover and insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot
- Press the override release inward while pulling the shift lever toward you and moving it to Neutral
- If no obvious override slot is present, the shift lock may be a simpler mechanical linkage: try firmly pulling the shifter toward you while pressing the button on the side of the lever (if equipped) and moving to Neutral
