🚨 2003 Oldsmobile Alero: Emergency Neutral

The 2003 Alero uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift interlock controlled by the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if you have any battery power.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side of the shifter housing—it may be covered by a small rectangular plastic cap.
  4. Using a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool, pry off the plastic cap if present.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or a key into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. If the vehicle must be towed, place it in Neutral; for long-distance towing, disconnect the driveshaft or use a flatbed/dolly.

With zero electrical power
With zero power, the shift lock may still release mechanically using the override slot. The key does not need to turn to any position for the mechanical override to work, but you may need to remove the key to access the override slot depending on console clearance.
