⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible
- Press the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock override - there should be a small access slot or removable cover near the base of the shifter, typically on the right side or front of the shifter base
- Remove any cover or trim piece covering the override access
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot
- Press or push the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving to Neutral
- Verify the vehicle is in Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Near the shifter base, typically front or right side of the console shifter assembly; may be covered by a small trim piece
With zero electrical power
The mechanical shift lock override does not require electrical power. With a dead battery, access the override slot and use a screwdriver to manually release the shift lock while moving the shifter to Neutral.
