⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Engage the parking brake fully and ensure the vehicle is on a level surface
- Attempt to activate ACC or READY mode by pressing the START button without depressing the brake pedal
- Locate the shift-lock override slot near the shifter base - look for a small plastic cap on the left side or front edge of the shifter console
- Carefully remove the override access cap using a small flathead screwdriver or pry tool
- Insert a rigid tool (screwdriver, key, or emergency tool from vehicle kit) into the exposed override slot
- Press and hold the override mechanism down firmly
- While holding the override, attempt to move the shift lever to the Neutral position
- Once in Neutral, remove the tool and verify the gear position indicator shows N
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot located at the base of the center console shifter, generally on the left side of the shifter assembly near the console surface
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the shift-lock override may have limited functionality due to electronic shifter components. The mechanical override exists but may not release the mechanism without minimal electrical power. If the override does not work, jump-starting the 12V battery to provide minimal power may be necessary. Do not force the shifter. If unable to engage Neutral even with override, flatbed transport is required.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID VEHICLE WARNING: This plug-in hybrid must NOT be flat-towed under any circumstances, even if successfully shifted to Neutral. The electric drive system can suffer catastrophic damage from towing with wheels on the ground. Always use flatbed transport. If you can power the vehicle to READY mode, there may be a transport mode accessible through the infotainment system - however, this still does NOT permit flat-towing for distances beyond a few feet for loading purposes.
