🚨 2020 Opel Grandland: Emergency Neutral
The 2020 Grandland X Hybrid uses a floor-mounted electronic shifter lever on the center console with electronic park brake and hybrid drivetrain interlocks.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked (electronic parking brake may not release without power)
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ON position if any 12V power is available
- Locate the shift lock override: look for a small rectangular cover or slot near the base of the shifter on the driver's side of the console, typically forward or to the left of the shifter boot
- Remove the override cover using a flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool
- Insert a screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral
- If the hybrid battery has charge but the 12V system is dead, the drivetrain may still be locked; proceed to tow mode activation if available
- For tow mode: with ignition ON (if possible), hold the shifter in Neutral position for several seconds until 'N' displays on the instrument cluster; some models require pressing the shifter button and holding in Neutral for 5-10 seconds to engage transport/tow mode

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the hybrid system will not power up and the high-voltage battery contactors remain open, but the transmission may still be mechanically locked. The shift lock override allows shifting to Neutral, but the steering column will remain locked. You must jump-start or connect external 12V power to unlock steering and activate tow mode. Without power, the electronic parking brake cannot be released electronically; check owner's manual for emergency EPB release procedure (typically involves removing a plug in the rear cargo area and manually retracting the brake motors). DO NOT attempt to tow with the rear wheels on the ground even in Neutral—hybrid transmission damage will occur.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID TOW WARNING: The Grandland X Hybrid MUST be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground. Even with the shifter in Neutral and tow mode activated, the rear electric drive unit can generate voltage if the wheels rotate, potentially causing severe damage to the hybrid system electronics and battery. Do not flat-tow or dolly-tow this vehicle under any circumstances. If the high-voltage battery is fully depleted and the 12V system is also dead, the vehicle may show warning lights when power is restored—this is normal for a hybrid in deep discharge.
