🚨 2023 Opel Grandland: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 Opel Grandland hybrid uses a conventional electronic console-mounted shifter with shift-by-wire technology and integrated shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ON/ACC position if 12V power is available (do not start engine)
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Locate the shift lock override slot, typically found as a small covered access hole near the base of the shifter console
  5. Remove the small plastic cap covering the override slot (may require prying gently with a flat tool)
  6. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot
  7. While pressing the tool down into the slot and holding the brake pedal, move the shifter to N (Neutral)
  8. If no 12V power is available, see noPowerNotes below

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter may not release even with override. You may need to jump-start the 12V battery temporarily (NOT the high-voltage battery) to provide enough power to release the shifter. The 12V battery is typically located in the engine bay. Once 12V power is restored even briefly, follow the standard override procedure. If jump-starting is not possible, the vehicle must be winched or dollied onto a flatbed with all wheels off the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: This is a plug-in hybrid with high-voltage battery system. Before towing, consult the owner's manual for the specific tow-mode procedure if available. Generally, Grandland hybrids should be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground to avoid damage to the electric drive system. Do NOT tow with driven wheels on the ground. Disconnect the 12V battery if the vehicle will sit with a dead battery for extended periods.
