🚨 2017 Opel Insignia: Emergency Neutral
The 2017 Opel Insignia (second generation, Insignia B) uses an electronic console-mounted shifter with shift-by-wire technology and integrated shift lock interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON/ACC position if 12V power is available (do not start engine)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small rectangular or circular cap near the shifter base on the center console
- Remove the plastic cap covering the override slot (use a flat tool if needed to pry gently)
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or the emergency key into the override slot
- Press down on the tool firmly while maintaining brake pedal pressure
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from P to N (Neutral)
- The shifter should release and move freely to Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot located near the base of the shifter on the center console, typically to the left side or front of the shifter assembly near the P-R-N-D indicator area
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter lock may still engage mechanically. First attempt the override procedure above even without power - the mechanical override should work. If the shifter remains locked, you may need to provide minimal 12V power via jump-start cables to energize the shift lock solenoid briefly. Connect jumper cables to another vehicle or jump pack, turn ignition to ACC, then use override procedure. The 12V battery is located in the engine bay on the right side (driver's side in RHD markets).
