🚨 2021 Opel Insignia: Emergency Neutral

The 2021 Insignia uses a conventional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the small rectangular shift lock override cover on the left side of the shifter base, near the P position indicator
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the shift lock override cover
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if possible) and pulling the shifter out of Park
  6. Move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If the vehicle must be moved with completely dead battery, keep the override pressed while an assistant pushes the vehicle, or use a flatbed tow truck

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override must be pressed and held continuously while the vehicle is being moved. The steering wheel will be locked, making towing on wheels extremely difficult and potentially dangerous. Flatbed towing is strongly recommended.
