🚨 2023 Opel Insignia: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 Opel Insignia uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - look for a small rectangular cap or cover near the base of the shifter on the left side or front face
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the override cover cap
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If moving to Neutral fails, keep the override pressed and attempt to shift through Reverse to Neutral
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or winched onto a flatbed
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cover cap near the shifter base, typically on the left side or front face of the shifter housing - exact position may vary by trim level
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override is mechanical and will still function. You will not be able to use the ignition, but the override slot bypass works without any electrical power. Simply remove the override cap and press the release mechanism while moving the shifter.
