The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
- Insert the key fob into the ignition slot (or have it present for keyless systems) and press the start button WITHOUT pressing the brake pedal—this should provide accessory power to the shifter electronics.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Move the shifter to the Neutral position (push forward once from Park position)—the shift-by-wire system requires at least accessory power.
- If the shift indicator shows N (Neutral) on the instrument cluster, release the parking brake and the vehicle can roll.
- If no power is available at all, locate the manual shift lock release: look for a small rectangular cap or cover near the base of the shifter console, typically on the left side or front edge.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the override cap.
- Insert the key blade or a small screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral.
- Keep the override pressed until the shifter reaches Neutral position.
