⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON position (or ACC if battery has some charge)
- Locate the shift lock override slot near the shifter base—typically a small covered slot or cap to the left or right of the shifter lever
- Remove the cap or cover (may require prying gently with a flat tool)
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or key into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If the shifter still won't move, maintain pressure on the override and try rocking the shifter gently
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed
Shift-lock override location
Near the shifter base console, typically a small covered slot adjacent to the lever—check left side and forward area of the shifter surround
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, you may need to manually unlock the shift lock: use the override slot method described above. The mechanical override should work without power, but you may need to rock the shifter more forcefully. If the steering lock is engaged, you will need to jump-start the 12V battery minimally to release the steering column lock before the vehicle can be steered onto a flatbed.
