⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power is available
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is typically a small rectangular slot with a cover cap near the base of the shifter console, usually on the left side or front of the shifter assembly
- Use a flat-head screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small cover cap over the override slot
- Insert the screwdriver or key fully into the override slot while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter to neutral
- If successful, the shifter will release and move to N position
- If the vehicle must be moved without the engine running, keep the override tool inserted and hold it while shifting

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery: the shift lock override is mechanical and does not require power. Remove the cover cap, insert the override tool (screwdriver or key) into the slot, and apply firm pressure while moving the shifter. You may need to rock the steering wheel slightly to relieve pressure on the steering lock. The override physically releases the shift lock solenoid.
