The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- For hybrid models: be aware the 12V battery may be in the rear/trunk area; try to jump-start the 12V system first if possible
- If 12V power is available, turn ignition to ON/RUN mode without starting the drive system
- Press the brake pedal and move the small shifter toggle to the neutral position
- If the shifter will not move due to shift lock, locate the shift lock override: look for a small cover or slot near the base of the shifter assembly, typically on the front or left side of the shifter housing
- Remove the cover cap with a flat tool and insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot
- While holding the override tool depressed, move the shifter toggle to neutral
- For hybrid models with completely dead 12V: the shift-by-wire system may not function at all—refer to tow mode procedure below

With completely dead 12V battery on hybrid models: the electronic shifter is shift-by-wire and may NOT release mechanically. Do not attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground. The 12V battery on hybrid 308s may be in the rear compartment—attempt jump-starting the 12V system to restore shifter function.
