The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power is available (press START button without brake pedal)
- Locate the shift lock override slot—typically a small circular or rectangular cap near the base of the shifter on the console
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade to pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while moving the shifter to N
- If the shifter is electronic monostable and completely dead, you may need to manually release the parking brake (see owner's manual for emergency brake release procedure)
- Once in neutral, the vehicle can be moved manually—have multiple people ready to push or use a dolly/flatbed
