The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake fully
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power is available (press START button without brake pedal)
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening typically covered by a removable plastic cap, positioned on the left side of the shifter base near the console trim
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If the shifter will not move electronically, you may need to physically pull the lever toward Neutral while maintaining pressure on the override
- Once in Neutral, you can release the override and the vehicle can roll freely

With completely dead 12V battery, the shift-lock override may not fully release the transmission. You may need to jump-start the 12V battery minimally (just enough for accessory power) to activate the shifter electronics. If this is not possible, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with drive wheels off the ground using wheel dollies or lifted.
