⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to the ON/ACC position if battery has any charge
- Locate the shift-lock override access - look for a small rectangular or circular cover/cap on the shifter console, typically to the right or front of the shifter base
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the override cover
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously moving the shifter from Park to Neutral
- Hold the override depressed until the shifter fully engages Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Small cover cap on the shifter console near the base of the shifter lever - typically on the right side or front of the shifter mechanism
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift-lock override should mechanically bypass the solenoid. If the override does not release the shifter, verify the override location in the owner's manual or attempt a jump-start to energize the shift-lock system minimally. Flatbed transport may be necessary if the override mechanism is inaccessible or non-functional.
