🚨 1990 Plymouth Acclaim: Emergency Neutral

The 1990 Plymouth Acclaim uses a column-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a mechanical shift-lock system that engages when the key is removed.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Insert the ignition key and turn it to the LOCK or ACC position (the key must be in the column to release the mechanical shifter lock on most Chrysler column shifters of this era)
  3. If the key is already in and the shifter is still locked, ensure the key is rotated to at least the ACC position
  4. Press the brake pedal (if any residual power exists) and press the button on the side of the shifter lever
  5. Move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  6. If the shifter remains locked and the key is in place, the shift-lock mechanism may be mechanically stuck - gently wiggle the steering wheel left and right while attempting to move the shifter, as steering column lock tension can sometimes bind the mechanism
Shift-lock override location
No separate shift-lock override slot exists on 1990 Acclaim column shifters - the key-in-column mechanism IS the primary lock/release system
With zero electrical power
The 1990 Acclaim's column shifter uses a primarily mechanical lock system tied to the ignition key position, not an electronic solenoid. With the key inserted and turned to ACC or ON (even with a dead battery), the shifter should release when the side button is pressed. If the shifter will not move with the key in place, the mechanical linkage may be binding - try wiggling the steering wheel and shifter simultaneously. A dead battery should not prevent shifting to Neutral on this mechanical system.
