⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- If 12V power is available, press the brake pedal and start button to power the vehicle to 'ON' mode (not Ready).
- With power on, press and hold the brake pedal, then move the shifter to Neutral by tapping it upward once from Park.
- If the shifter will not release from Park due to shift interlock failure, locate the small circular override cap on the left side of the shifter base near the cup holder.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or key to pop off the override cap, revealing a small release button or slot.
- While holding the brake pedal (if power is available), press the override button down firmly and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the vehicle has absolutely no 12V power, you must jump-start the 12V battery (located under the hood) to restore minimal power before attempting to shift—the electronic shifter requires some power to release the parking pawl.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter and parking pawl cannot be electronically released. Jump-start the 12V battery using the posts under the hood to restore minimal vehicle power, then follow the shift interlock override procedure. Do not attempt to push or tow without power.

CRITICAL: The Polestar 3 is a full EV with no traditional mechanical transmission. If the high-voltage system is faulted or the vehicle cannot enter tow mode, DO NOT tow with any wheels on the ground. Always use a flatbed or trailer. To enable tow mode (if vehicle has power): access Vehicle Settings > Towing Mode in the center screen, which disengages the drive motors. Towing without tow mode active will cause severe motor and inverter damage.
