⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chock all wheels before attempting any procedure
- Access the 12V battery in the front trunk (frunk) - if accessible, connect a jump pack or charger to restore minimal electrical power
- With 12V power restored, press the brake pedal firmly and start the vehicle or place it in accessory mode using the start button
- The monostable shifter should now respond - push forward briefly for Reverse, pull back once for Neutral, pull back twice for Drive
- If the shifter remains locked with power restored, check the center console for a small shift lock override - it may be a small cap or slot near the shifter base on the right side
- If present, pry up the cap with a flathead screwdriver, press down the override button with a key or small tool while pressing the brake, then move the shifter to Neutral
- If no electrical power can be restored at all, the vehicle cannot be shifted and must be loaded onto a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground using wheel dollies or a full rollback

Without any 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function at all. The vehicle must be flatbedded with all wheels off the ground. Polestar vehicles use electronic parking brakes that also require power to release.
