The 1990 Firebird uses a floor-mounted console shifter with a push-button release on the front of the shifter handle.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (if battery has any charge)
- Locate the shift lock override button or slot - it is typically near the base of the shifter on the console, often on the left or right side under a small cover
- Remove any small cover or cap (some models have exposed slots)
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral
- If the steering wheel is locked, turn the key to ACC while gently moving the wheel to unlock
Shift-lock override location
At or near the base of the console shifter, typically on the side under a small cover; look for a small rectangular slot or access point
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical override will still function to release the shift lock. You will need to manually turn the key to ACC to unlock the steering column. On third-gen F-bodies, the shift interlock is primarily mechanical with the override accessible even without power.
