🚨 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix: Emergency Neutral

The 2008 Grand Prix (final model year) uses a traditional console-mounted PRNDL shift lever with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible (provides power to release solenoid)
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cap on the passenger side of the shifter base, near the front right corner of the shifter bezel
  4. Remove the cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail
  5. Press the brake pedal and hold it down
  6. Insert a flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and push down firmly
  7. While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  8. The vehicle can now roll freely - maintain brake pressure or use parking brake

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: the shift lock override is mechanical and works without power. However, you will need to jump-start or connect a battery booster to at least ACC position to unlock the steering wheel before the vehicle can be steered onto a flatbed. The override mechanism itself functions without electrical power.
