The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible (provides power to release solenoid)
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cap on the passenger side of the shifter base, near the front right corner of the shifter bezel
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail
- Press the brake pedal and hold it down
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and push down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- The vehicle can now roll freely - maintain brake pressure or use parking brake

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: the shift lock override is mechanical and works without power. However, you will need to jump-start or connect a battery booster to at least ACC position to unlock the steering wheel before the vehicle can be steered onto a flatbed. The override mechanism itself functions without electrical power.
