🚨 2005 Pontiac GTO: Emergency Neutral
The 2005 GTO (Holden Monaro-based) uses a console-mounted automatic shifter with electronic shift interlock integrated into the center console.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small covered slot or removable trim piece on the left side of the shifter base near the driver's side of the console
- Remove the cover or trim piece (may require prying with a small flathead screwdriver)
- Press the brake pedal and hold it down
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press the release mechanism
- While holding the override engaged, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- The vehicle can now roll - ensure parking brake is engaged when not attended
Shift-lock override location
Look for a small covered access point on the left side (driver's side) of the shifter base; typical Holden/GM practice places it near the shifter boot. Exact location may require inspection of the console trim.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: the shift lock override is mechanical and will function without power. However, the steering lock will remain engaged. You must supply at least ACC power (via jump box or booster pack connected to battery) to unlock the steering column before the vehicle can be steered. The transmission can be placed in neutral mechanically, but steering requires electrical power to the column lock solenoid.
