🚨 2006 Pontiac Vibe: Emergency Neutral

The 2006 Pontiac Vibe uses a console-mounted automatic shifter with a thumb button on top of the shift knob (Toyota Matrix twin).

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if any battery power remains.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the console trim directly forward (toward the dashboard) of the shifter base - look for a small square or rectangular cap.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the cap covering the shift lock release.
  5. Insert a small screwdriver, key, or pen into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the thumb button on the shifter and move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. The shifter should now move freely to Neutral. Remove the tool and release the parking brake to move the vehicle.

With zero electrical power
If the battery is completely dead, the shift lock override should still work mechanically on this Toyota-engineered design. No power is required for the mechanical override to function. If the override does not work, verify you are pressing firmly and holding while attempting to shift.
