🚨 2009 Pontiac Vibe: Emergency Neutral

The 2009 Pontiac Vibe uses a traditional console-mounted shifter with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake pedal interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cap directly to the LEFT of the shifter base on the console
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key fully into the override slot and press DOWN firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. Remove the tool and replace the cap

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override is fully mechanical and works without any electrical power. You do not need to turn the key, simply use the override slot while pressing the shifter button. If the steering wheel is locked, you may need to charge the battery minimally or use a jump box just to unlock the steering column for towing.
